Prior to any treatment in our office a complete examination is provided. It is needed in order to determine the extent of the pulpal injury and make sure that the tooth is a good candidate for endodontic therapy. Rest assured that no treatment is begun until consent for treatment is made by the patient and all questions are answered.
Treatment begins by thorough and complete anesthesia of the tooth and surrounding gum and bone. Once this is satisfactorily obtained the injured pulp is painlessly removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed.
Under certain circumstances (such as previous non-healing root canal therapy, extremely curved or obstructed canals, etc.), microsurgery may be indicated. If this is needed you should know that we are experts in performing this procedure, and utilize sophisticated equipment to ensure the best result.
What happens after treatment?
When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your general dentist. You should contact your general dentist’s office for a follow-up restoration within one month of completion of your root canal therapy at our office. Your general dentist will decide what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond
Optional Oral Sedation
If you are nervous, oral sedation is a great option. Many people have had a past history of bad experiences in childhood and are generally anxious towards dental treatment. For such patients, we recommend premedication with an anti-anxiety medication like (Valium, or Halcion).
Believe it or not many of our patients often fall sleep while we are working on them even without premedication! However, should you still choose to take a sedative medication, please mention that to our front desk staff during your initial phone call.
You may require a consultation visit first before the appointment to get a prescription as well as to review and discuss your medical history and informed consent for treatment. If taking a sedative please plan to have a driver with you, as you may not drive to and from the office unassisted.
